Specialist Observation & Reflective Consultation for Early Years Provisions

Jogo Behaviour Support

Deepening understanding. Strengthening practice. Supporting children meaningfully.

At Jogo Behaviour Support, we offer a Specialist Observation and Reflective Consultation service designed to support early years settings in understanding children whose needs may feel complex, unclear, or difficult to interpret.

Deepening understanding. Strengthening practice. Supporting children meaningfully

We are delighted to be working with Tracy Gallagher, a highly experienced and skilled early years leader and specialist, to enhance our early years support.

This is a thoughtful, reflective process that moves beyond surface behaviours, helping teams to gain a deeper insight into a child's lived experience within their setting.

What is Specialist Observation?

This service involves a focused, in-depth observation of a child within their natural environment, followed by a structured reflective process with staff.

The aim is not to assess or judge, but to notice, understand, and think deeply about what a child may be communicating through their behaviour, interactions, and emotional responses.

How the Process Works

1. Focused Observation

A one-hour observation is undertaken within the setting. The observer remains fully present and attentive, without note-taking, allowing for deep attunement to:

  • Interactions and relationships
  • Emotional responses
  • Behaviour patterns
  • Environmental influences

2. Detailed Written Narrative

Following the observation, a comprehensive written account is produced, capturing:

  • Sequences of events
  • Relational dynamics
  • Emotional tone
  • Patterns of engagement and withdrawal

3. Reflective Team Discussion

A structured session is facilitated with the child's key adults. This creates space to:

  • Explore multiple perspectives
  • Reflect on adult responses and interactions
  • Consider the child's internal experience
  • Develop shared understanding

4. Practical Next Steps

The session concludes with thoughtful, tailored strategies to support the child within the setting.

What Settings Can Expect

  • A deeper understanding of the child's strengths and vulnerabilities
  • Greater clarity where staff feel uncertain or “stuck”
  • Enhanced reflective practice within the team
  • More attuned and effective adult responses
  • Practical, meaningful strategies grounded in understanding
  • Increased staff confidence in supporting complex emotional needs

Who is This For?

This service is particularly helpful for:

  • Children whose behaviour feels difficult to understand
  • Situations where progress has plateaued
  • Children presenting with emotional, relational, or regulatory difficulties
  • Teams seeking a deeper, reflective approach rather than quick solutions

Our Approach

At Jogo Behaviour Support, our work is rooted in:

  • Relational and trauma-informed practice
  • Deep respect for the child's experience
  • Curiosity rather than judgement
  • Supporting adults to think, reflect, and respond with intention

We believe that when adults are supported to understand more deeply, children are supported more effectively.
